Energize your writing by entering a contest

Writing is its own reward, but it’s good to submit to contests to see how your work rates. It can give energy and focus to your writing, and if your submission wins, you might catch the eye of an editor or agent.

Black Warrior Review

Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Black Warrior Review are given annually for a single poem, a short story, and a work of nonfiction (including creative nonfiction). Judges are Kate Durbin, poetry; Brian Evenson, fiction; and Jenny Boully, nonfiction. Using the online submission system, submit up to three poems of any length or a story or essay of up to 7,500 words. Entry fee includes a subscription to Black Warrior Review. A prize of $1,000 and publication in Rosebud Magazine is given annually for a short story. Submit a previously unpublished story of up to 4,500 words with a $10 entry fee ($15 to receive a copy of the prize issue). Ray Vukcevich will judge.
